The Curious Incident
Of the Guy Who Wrote an Entire Score
for the Dog in the Night-Time
And Then Gave it Away for Free
What
I created underscore music for a local production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Simon Stephens (based on the novel by Mark Haddon) and am making it available for free to amateur productions, and for fair rates to professional productions.
Why
The play is very close to my heart, and I want to see it done well everywhere. The music has been a lynchpin of the design of the show in most productions since its premiere in 2012—so much so, it is even referenced in the script. But not every theater can afford to commission (or even license) work tailored to the show. Note that if you can afford to commission a local composer, I highly encourage you to do that instead!
Who
My name is Matt, and I am a composer (and teacher and performing arts professional) in the state of Virginia, in the United States. I saw the original Broadway production in 2015 after predicting it would win Best Play… which it did! (Note: I also later predicted The Ferryman would win. Which it did. If you want me to successfully predict YOUR play to win a Tony, then I’m afraid I will have to charge you for that.) A local theater mounted a production, which I proudly participated in, and which inspired me to write an accompanying score.
How
I am an independent artist, very friendly, and handle requests on a case-by-case basis. If you want to license the score, please contact me and we will arrange it. Note that it is copyrighted work and even for amateurs, permission must be granted for use. It’s free for high schools, universities, and community theaters; for Equity and other professional productions, a fair rate will be provided depending on run length and house size. Samples are available here, and upon licensing, the full library will be provided in high quality 48kHz/24bit lossless sound files, with some suggested cue sheets. Your sound designer will then be welcome to edit & rearrange the cues if needed to fit your concept. (I’d also be glad to provide modifications and customizations for an hourly rate.)
